Celebrating Heather Farris: July Teacher of the Month

As Libertas Academy – Colleton prepares to open its doors this August, a wave of anticipation surrounds the staff members who will set the tone for this new school built on innovation, community, and a love for learning. Among these educators is Mrs. Heather Farris, who will be stepping into a role she’s dreamed of for years: teaching kindergarten.

With three years of experience in early childhood education under her belt, Mrs. Farris is bringing her energy, passion, and student-first philosophy to Libertas Colleton. Having previously taught first and second grade, she’s excited to make the move to kindergarten, a grade level she’s been drawn to since her student teaching days.

“I have always had a love for school and learning,” Mrs. Farris shares. “But what really sparked my path into education was helping my mom tutor my cousin. Watching those ‘lightbulb moments’ when something finally clicked was so rewarding. That experience helped me realize I wanted to make a difference for young learners, and I changed my major to early childhood education.”

Mrs. Farris began her career teaching second grade for one year, followed by two years in first grade. Now, she’s fulfilling her goal of teaching kindergarten, where she can support students in their very first steps of formal learning.

For Mrs. Farris, the magic of teaching lies in witnessing growth academically, emotionally, and socially. One of her most memorable moments came at the end of a school year, when she compared students’ diagnostic data from the beginning and end. “Seeing how far they’d come made every ounce of work worth it,” she says. “Those are the moments that remind you why you do what you do.”

Her teaching philosophy centers around creating a student-centered classroom where learners feel safe to take risks, make mistakes, and explore the world around them. She believes in the power of positive reinforcement and building confidence in each child. “When students are encouraged and feel supported, they naturally become more curious and engaged,” she explains.

Mrs. Farris is also enthusiastic about teaching at a charter school, especially in a setting like Libertas Colleton. “I love the environment,” she says. “There’s more autonomy for teachers, especially when it comes to how we structure our day and tailor instruction based on our students’ needs. That freedom allows us to be more responsive and creative in the classroom.”

With teachers like Mrs. Farris leading the way, the future at Libertas Colleton is already shining bright. Thank you, Mrs. Farris, for all that you do for the children of South Carolina!
