South Carolina has long struggled to establish meaningful change in the rural I-95 Corridor, known as the “Corridor of Shame.” Reputed for its limited access to resources and poor academic outcomes, the need for reform in this area was highlighted in the 2005 documentary “Corridor of Shame: Neglect of South Carolina’s Rural Schools.
The Institute supports local communities and the State Department of Education in their mission to increase the academic achievement of children within the “Corridor of Shame.” To achieve this, the Institute offers $100,000 in forgivable, no-interest loans to as many as 10 approved applicant groups dedicated to launching charter schools in the region.
To qualify, these groups must maintain a proven track record of operating high-quality schools. The loan is also available to approved existing schools in the Corridor looking to expand their reach. By combining rigorous financial controls with deep academic and operational support, the Institute equips these schools for long-term success.
Through this initiative, the Institute transforms the “Corridor of Shame” into the “Corridor of Success” over the next decade.
