Every day, teachers at Libertas Academy – Boiling Springs work to help students grow academically, personally, and confidently. This month, we honor Mrs. Crystal Barrs, a K–8 Multilingual Learner (ML) teacher, as the Institute’s July Teacher of the Month.
With 16 years of teaching experience, Mrs. Barrs brings a wealth of knowledge, compassion, and dedication to her role. Although this is her first year at Libertas Academy, she has already made a tremendous impact on students, families, and colleagues through her commitment to supporting multilingual learners.
Mrs. Barrs’ journey into education began with a simple conversation during college. While she was still exploring career options, a friend pointed out her natural ability to connect with children and suggested she consider teaching. That encouragement led her to pursue a Bachelor’s degree in Early Childhood Education from Converse University, followed by a Master’s degree in Classroom Leadership from Southern Wesleyan University. Along the way, her experiences working with multilingual learners inspired her to earn her ESOL certification, allowing her to better serve students from diverse linguistic and cultural backgrounds.
Throughout her career, Mrs. Barrs has taught both kindergarten and second grade, building a strong foundation in early childhood education. Today, as a Multilingual Learner teacher, she works with students from kindergarten through eighth grade, helping them develop English language skills while ensuring they feel encouraged and believed in. She enjoys supporting students across multiple grade levels and watching them grow into confident learners and communicators.
One of Mrs. Barrs’ proudest accomplishments has been successfully completing her first year as an ML teacher. Transitioning into a new role came with challenges, including learning new procedures, supporting students across a wide range of ages, and meeting the unique needs of each learner. However, seeing her students increase their English proficiency, gain confidence, and achieve academic success made every challenge worthwhile.
Her teaching philosophy centers on creating a supportive, inclusive, and engaging environment where every student feels valued and capable of success. Mrs. Barrs believes that all children can learn and grow when provided with the right tools, encouragement, and opportunities. She engages students through hands-on activities, collaborative learning, visual supports, and meaningful opportunities to practice speaking, listening, reading, and writing. Most importantly, she works to build strong relationships so students know they are supported every step of the way.
When asked what she loves most about teaching in a charter school, Mrs. Barrs highlights the strong commitment to student success at Libertas Academy. She appreciates the school’s focus on both academic excellence and character development, as well as the use of high-quality curricula such as Core Knowledge, Eureka Math, and Core Virtues. She values being part of a community where staff, students, and families share a common belief that every child can achieve at high levels with strong support and high expectations.
Reflecting on her experience at Libertas Academy, Mrs. Barrs says she feels fortunate to serve multilingual learners and help create an environment where students feel welcomed, valued, and confident in who they are. She is passionate about advocating for her students, collaborating with teachers and families, and helping every child reach their full potential.
