State Superintendent of Education Ellen Weaver visits Midlands STEM Charter School

WINNSBORO, SC – On Friday, October 11, State Superintendent of Education visited the newly constructed campus of Midlands STEM Charter School (Midlands STEM) located in Winnsboro, South Carolina.

Superintendent Weaver was welcomed to campus by Midlands STEM students and given a tour of the new facility by Midlands STEM Board Chair Kevin Thomas, CEO Dr. TK Kennedy, and Principal Ms. Chantell Berry. Later, Superintendent Weaver participated in a roundtable discussion with Midlands STEM leadership, parents, and Charter Institute at Erskine Superintendent Cameron Runyan.

“It was a great experience to have [Superintendent Weaver] in our facility,” said Kennedy. “It’s great for our students to see that we make a difference in South Carolina. We want to be a beacon of light to the community.”

While on the tour, Superintendent Weaver observed a science lesson, art class, and math lesson.

Later, at the roundtable, Superintendent Weaver asked Midlands STEM parents to share what they loved about their school. Many parents mentioned how close-knit the school community is.

“Finding this school gave us a family dynamic,” said Ms. Carpenter, a parent at Midlands STEM. “Her education is wonderful. We’re very happy.”

Midlands STEM Principal Berry also shared with Superintendent Weaver the school’s upcoming plans for the school year, emphasizing a focus on academics, specifically mathematics. Berry also shared how the school’s partnerships with Midlands Technical College and SCOUT Motors will provide hands-on learning opportunities for the Maverick students.

“My dream for education across South Carolina is that every parent has the opportunity to be in a school where there is this trusted relationship”, said Superintendent Weaver.

To conclude the visit, the leadership of Midlands STEM presented Superintendent Weaver with several special gifts, including a 3D-printed ornament made by students on campus.
