CLINTON, SC – Thornwell Charter School (Thornwell) 8th grade student William “Bear” Gunter has been named the 2025 Middle School Student of the Year by the Charter Institute at Erskine (Institute). The announcement was made during the Institute’s Awards Banquet on May 15, where over 500 attendees gathered to celebrate outstanding teachers, students, volunteers, and school communities across South Carolina.
When William first enrolled at Thornwell as a fourth-grade student, he faced significant academic challenges and was performing several grade levels behind. Despite early struggles, William and his family remained committed to his growth. Through perseverance and support, he is now excelling academically, earning straight A’s as an eighth grader.
In addition to being committed to his education goals, William plays an integral role in the Thornwell community. As the school mascot – known as “Big Dog” – William has found a way to entertain people of all ages and bring a smile and energy to every room he enters.
He was nominated by leadership at his school for his notable contributions to the Thornwell community. According to Ms. Melissa Moore, Thornwell Principal, “Bear brings joy in everything he does. He is not afraid to work hard to achieve his goals and always makes sure everyone is included. TCS is a better place because of Bear Gunter!”
When William was invited on stage at the Banquet to accept his award, he put on his “Big Dog” mascot head and performed a short dance, energizing the room and representing the spirit of the Thornwell community.

The purpose of the Institute’s Student of the Year Award is to recognize a student that has gone above and beyond in their school communities, both academically and culturally. These students embody the mission and values of both their school and the Institute as a whole. William’s selection reflects both his personal growth and his impact on his school community.
