Celebrating Bradley Smith: April Teacher of the Month

The Charter Institute is excited to highlight Mr. Bradley Smith of Mevers School of Excellence as our April Teacher of the Month! Now in his third year at Mevers, he teaches World Geography to 7th graders with a focus on connection, curiosity, and community. “I believe that students learn best when they are allowed to be themselves inside the classroom,” he says. His teaching philosophy centers around respect, routine, and high expectations—creating a space where students feel both safe and challenged.

Before stepping into the world of education, Mr. Smith spent nearly two decades in the business sector, building a career in accounting. But a moment of change—and what he describes as a sign—set him on a completely new path. “After nearly 20 years in the business world, I finally took my mother’s advice and put my history degree to good use,” he shared. When he was laid off from his job, it felt like the perfect opportunity to pursue his desire to enter the education field. That leap of faith led him to the doors of Mevers in the 2022-2023 school year.

His impact has not gone unnoticed. In October 2024, Mr. Smith was selected by his peers as Teacher of the Month—an honor he humbly calls “one of my greatest achievements in my 25-plus years of employment, both in and out of education.” That recognition reflects the strong bonds he builds with students and colleagues alike.

What truly sets Mr. Smith apart is his love for the school community. “I love the smaller classroom size and the community we have built at Mevers,” he says. For him, the success of students depends on a shared commitment from teachers, administrators, and families—something he sees every day at his school.

Outside the classroom, Mr. Smith is a devoted family man. He’s been married for 21 years and is a proud father to a 20-year-old son and a 16-year-old daughter. When he’s not grading papers or planning lessons, you might find him relaxing in the mountains, diving into a history documentary, or cheering on his favorite sports—from hockey to college football.

We are proud to celebrate Mr. Smith because of his clear passion and commitment to his student’s success. His engagement with students fosters an environment where curiosity is encouraged and the pursuit of knowledge is fun. Congratulations, Mr. Smith, and thank you for your commitment to the Mevers community!
