Celebrating Angela Capps: January Teacher of the Month

This January, we are thrilled to honor Angela Capps as the Teacher of the Month for her outstanding dedication and impact at South Carolina Connections Academy (SCCA). A passionate educator with 18 years of experience, Angela’s journey to teaching is a story of persistence, purpose, and a true calling to help students.

From Psychology to Special Education
Angela’s path to the classroom was inspired by both her childhood dream of becoming a teacher and the influence of her aunt, a reading intervention teacher. After earning a degree in psychology, Angela found herself searching for a career that aligned with her passion for helping others. Her decision to return to school and pursue a degree in special education was life-changing. Since then, she has dedicated her career to supporting middle school students in special education, particularly in learning support.

Making an Impact Across States and Subjects
Throughout her career, Angela has taught a variety of grade levels and subjects in both North and South Carolina. Her impressive range includes teaching English Language Arts, math, and special education in both inclusion and resource settings. From working with struggling readers to gifted and talented students in honors courses, Angela has always emphasized the importance of seeing the potential in every student.

Her belief that “students need a teacher who values, supports, and believes in them” has been a guiding principle in her teaching. Whether teaching middle school math or helping students overcome challenges in reading, Angela’s commitment to nurturing confidence and skills in her students remains steadfast.

According to Courtney Boyd, Director of Special Services, Angela “comes to school every day with student learning and teacher support in mind. She exhibits care, flexibility, advocacy, and innovation in her instructional practice and professional relationships. Angela knows all students can learn, and she ensures they achieve to the best of their ability.”

A Memorable Achievement
One of Angela’s most cherished moments as a teacher occurred during an Individualized Education Program (IEP) meeting. A student she had worked with for three years shared that, for the first time, she could check out and read books at her grade level. She even joined a drama team and gained the confidence to read and memorize lines. This accomplishment was a powerful reminder of the transformative impact that education and a teacher’s dedication can have on a student.

Teaching Philosophy
Angela’s teaching philosophy is captured in the “Story of the Starfish” by Loren Eiseley. Much like the young man in the story who made a difference for one starfish at a time, Angela believes in the power of making an impact on each student in her care. “Even though I cannot reach them all, I can make a difference in the ones that have been placed in my path,” she explains. Her belief in every child’s ability to learn drives her to create a safe, supportive, and inspiring environment.

Erin Hynum, Middle School Principal, adds, “A truly remarkable teacher not only transforms the lives of her students with her kindness, support, and dedication but also inspires and uplifts her colleagues. Angela’s willingness to help at every turn and her leadership in spearheading our middle school inclusion program has been nothing short of extraordinary. Thanks to her vision and efforts, student participation in the program is thriving, creating a more inclusive and connected school community.”

What She Loves About Teaching at SCCA
For Angela, working at South Carolina Connections Academy is a source of pride. She appreciates the welcoming culture and supportive environment that empowers both students and staff. “SCCA exemplifies ‘Learning for All,’ and I am grateful to be part of a school where students feel valued and cared for,” she shares.

Josh Kitchens, Executive Director, sums up Angela’s contributions perfectly: “Angela is not only an exceptional teacher but an exceptional person. She has a servant’s heart in all that she does, supporting students, families, and her peers. Angela truly lives out SCCA’s mission of Learning for All. Her advocacy and thoughtfulness are always on display. Our school is fortunate to call Angela ours!”

Gratitude and Passion
Angela’s gratitude for her role as an educator is evident in her reflections. “I am thankful every day for the opportunity to help students and influence the lives of those I serve and teach,” she says. Her passion and commitment are truly an inspiration to her colleagues and students alike.

Thank you, Angela, for your tireless efforts and for being a beacon of hope and encouragement for your students. Congratulations on being named January’s Teacher of the Month!
