Congratulations to Ms. Vicky Culbertson from Thornwell Charter School who has been announced as the December Teacher of the Month. As a Teacher, Librarian, and Literacy Strategies instructor for grades 5K-12, Vicky’s dedication to nurturing a love of reading and her ability to inspire students make her an invaluable part of the Saints family.
A Passion Sparked by Family and Stories
Vicky’s passion for education began at a young age, inspired by her grandmother, a fourth-grade teacher who instilled in her a love of stories, books, and teaching. From reading aloud to her dolls and puppies as a child to devouring the Laura Ingalls Wilder series in third grade, Vicky’s journey was shaped by her deep connection to literature. Her early love of reading blossomed into a lifelong commitment to helping others find the same joy in books.
An Educator with an Incredible Career
With an incredible career spanning 45 years, Vicky has served in a variety of roles, from teaching Special Education and middle school literature to serving as a librarian for students across all grade levels. Among her many cherished memories, one stands out: reading Where the Red Fern Grows with her middle school class and witnessing a student, moved to tears, discover the emotional power of the story. Moments like these remind Vicky why she loves her work.
Teaching Philosophy: Everyone is a Reader
Vicky’s teaching philosophy is simple yet profound: “Everybody is a reader; some people just haven’t found their favorite book yet.” She goes above and beyond to help her students find books that resonate with them. Through innovative activities like book passes, reading challenges, and collaborative projects, Vicky fosters a culture of literacy and engagement. Her leadership extends beyond her classroom, as she models her expectations by logging her own reading and encouraging her colleagues to do the same.
