CAMDEN, SC – Students, staff members, and parents gathered at the Montessori School of
Camden on Wednesday, August 31 to celebrate the life and legacy of Maria Montessori.
August 31 marks the birthday of Maria Montessori, who is the founder and namesake for this
innovative style of education. On August 31, students and staff at MSC celebrated the
philosopher’s 152nd birthday, joining in on the celebration that took place nationwide.
MSC staff, students, and the students’ parents honored Montessori’s legacy by giving
presentations about her life, demonstrating lessons, and recognizing the impact that she had on
the education world. Additionally, students were able to take home four new books, thanks to a
large grant from Reading is Fundamental. Students ended the morning with experiential learning
in the form of farm-fresh ice cream and visits with a calf, compliments of Wateree River Farm.
The MSC community is unique for many reasons, one of them being the high level of parent
engagement. According to Deb Cyrier, MSC School Leader, 75% of parents at the school were
in attendance today.
“The thing that excites me most about MSC is the commitment that both staff and families have
to the program,” says Cyrier. “The turnout, the staff commitment, being able to offer an option
that’s different than conventional learning—that’s what we’re all about.”
The Montessori School of Camden is a K-8 public charter school that offers a carefully
developed Montessori-style of education. MSC is authorized through the Charter Institute at
Erskine and is a licensed ABC QUALITY childcare provider for infants to 4K.
