The Institute's New Accountability Model

Innovation in Crisis – The Nation’s One-of-a-Kind Model Focusing on Progress Monitoring

Comprehensive Student Snapshot
(CSS)

SECTION 59-40-20 of the South Carolina Charter School Act establishes the responsibility of charter school authorizers to establish new forms of accountability for schools. The Institute’s new accountability model, the Comprehensive Student Snapshot, establishes a quarterly report for school leaders, school boards, parents, community members, and all other stakeholders.

What's included in the css?

The CSS provides a quarterly report on progress in the following areas:

  1. Academics
  2. Federal Programs
  3. Finance
  4. Governance
  5. PowerSchool
  6. Student Services

The Institute’s team reviews and edits the Comprehensive Student Snapshot at their team retreat.

How is this different?

The CSS provides formative data in several areas to school leaders, school Boards, and teachers each quarter, rather than in an annual report. This data will be utilized to help teachers adapt their classroom instruction based on current student needs, rather than relying on data from end-of-year state assessments, which are already a year old by the time it is received by a school.

Our Goals

The short-term goal of the CSS model is to provide more formative feedback so that schools can adjust their instructional program as data is received.

The Institute has evidence that our schools are not trying to avoid accountability, but instead, are receiving more formative feedback. The long-term objective of this model is to share the CSS with other districts and pilot an alternative accountability system statewide that focuses on individual student growth as a measure of success.
